http://reason.com

Only time will tell if Operation Iraqi Freedom
was a blunder, writes Cathy Young. But it is not too early to say
that Americans are not the villains in this story. As Young
explains, that role belongs to the dictator who drove so many of
his subjects to welcome a foreign invasion, and to the extremists
who unleashed carnage on their own. View this article.

It's Not the Size of the Stimulus.

http://reason.com

Here's
Jill Lawrence at Politics Daily
:

After talking to five economists, I can give you the bottom
line: Spending the money differently probably wouldn't have changed
our circumstances much. But the economists took diverse paths to
that conclusion, and they have varying opinions about where to go
from here....

The Summer of Recovery Is Over; The Fall of the Economy Is Here

http://reason.com

Ring in Labor Day with this news: The U.S.
shed
another 54,000 jobs
in August, slightly advancing the 9.6
percent unemployment rate.
Good news: Most of the jobs lost were government jobs, as the
2010 Census wound down and the Stimulus ran its benighted course.
The private sector added 67,000 jobs in August.

A Caudillo's Own Story

Via Washington Examiner
columnist Mark Hemingway comes
news that Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, who once denounced
homosexual Cubans as “faggots” (maricones) who served the
interests of imperialism, has “taken blame” for his revolution’s
“excesses” against gay Cubans, which once included sending sexual

State Bureaucrats Continuing to Advance REAL ID

http://www.cato-at-liberty.org

By Jim HarperAcross the country, state legislatures have objected to, and outright rejected, the national ID and surveillance mandate imposed on them by the REAL ID Act. Passed in May 2005 with a compliance deadline three years later, the law has never been implemented. The Department of Homeland Security has repeatedly threatened to deny air travel to people from the states refusing compliance, then backed down when states have not caved to its demands.

New at Reason: Jesse Walker on The Ruling Class

http://reason.com

Few essays attracted as much
attention from right-wing readers this summer as "America's Ruling
Class—and the Perils of Revolution" by Angelo Codevilla. Now that
very long article has been expanded into a very brief book, called
The Ruling Class. The book is an instructive document for
anyone interested in the state of the American right, writes
Managing Editor Jesse Walker: Codevilla tries to combine
conservative cultural complaints with the libertarian case against
an intrusive central government.

There’s No Such Thing As a Free Vacation

http://reason.com

In a debate between Ezra Klein
and Reihan Salam about the desirability of regulations requiring
employers to give workers paid vacation, Klein
writes
:

Broadly speaking, employees with the power to demand more paid
vacation do so, and employees without the power to demand more paid
vacation get less—or in some cases, no—paid vacation. A law
guaranteeing paid vacation would primarily tilt the playing field
toward low-income workers, rather than against them, as is the case
now.
