The National Broadband Plan Is Bad. Period.

http://www.cato-at-liberty.org

By Jim HarperI’ve seen plenty of stories and gotten a fair number of calls from reporters about the national broadband plan. They generally want to get some insight from down in the weeds of the communications world. What do you think of this part? What do you think of that?

Can States Say "No Thanks" to ObamaCare's Health Insurance Mandate?

http://reason.com

Nancy Pelosi may be convinced that we have to pass health care
reform in order to find out what's in it, but if it passes, there's
at least one provision we can already count on: an individual
mandate to buy health insurance.

New at Reason: Ronald Bailey on the Deliciousness of Sea Turtle Steak

http://reason.com

The
Cayman Island Sea Turtle Farm was established by entrepreneur and
libertarian hero Antony Fisher in 1968. Unfortunately, the farm
went bankrupt when the trade in sea turtle products was banned
internationally. Now a government-owned corporation, the farm is a
huge tourist attraction supplying turtle meat to the local market;
it also releases thousands of turtles into the wild. Aware of the
vexed history of the farm, Reason Science Correspondent
Ronald Bailey traveled to the Cayman Islands to discover just how
tasty sea turtle can be.

From "Sweatshop" Laborers to Landlords

http://reason.com

Great piece
in the Portland Oregnonian about how
factory workers in China, far from being slaves, are now earning
enough to buy real estate and send their kids to colleges so that
they won't have to work in factories. Here's the beginning:

WUHU, China -- Years after activists accused Nike and other
Western brands of running Third World sweatshops, the issue has
taken a surprising turn. [...]

The Washington Foreign Policy Elite’s Unspoken Assumptions and Norms

http://www.cato-at-liberty.org

By Justin LoganIn a column for Foreign Policy, James Traub writes
The Powell Doctrine became received wisdom at precisely the moment it was being superseded by events, for the end of the Cold War produced a set of “complex emergencies” in Somalia, Haiti, Kurdistan, and the Balkans that required a combination of force and large-scale civilian presence.

Will Justice Scalia Abandon Originalism in the Chicago Gun Case?

http://reason.com

Writing in the Washington Examiner, legal scholars Josh
Blackman and Ilya Shapiro wonder if Justice Antonin Scalia will
abandon originalism when it comes time to finally decide
McDonald v. Chicago:

The Court could take two possible routes, both under the
Fourteenth Amendment, to apply, or “incorporate,” the Second
Amendment right against the states: the Due Process Clause and the
Privileges or Immunities Clause.

Recently at Reason.tv: 3 Reasons Why Obama's High-Speed Rail Will Go Nowhere Fast

http://reason.com

Supertrain 2010 = Supertrain 1979!
President Barack Obama has pledged $8 billion in tax dollars to
build a national network of high-speed rail—trains that can carry
passengers at speeds in excess of 150 MPH.
But the Supertrain fantasy was a mistake back in the 1970s, when
it gave rise to one of the most
expensive—and rotten—TV shows
in history. And it's just as much
of a wreck in the 21st century for at least three reasons:

http://www.cato-at-liberty.org

his theory of the plant's criminogenic effects is slightly more
sophisticated than Harry

Paul Ehrlich Goes Up Against "Well-Funded, Merciless Enemies" to Save the Earth from Certain Destruction. Again.

http://reason.com

By now, talking smack about environmental
doomsayer and neo-Malthusian
Paul Ehrlich should fall solidly under the heading "dead horse, the
beating of." But Ehrilch is some sort of zombie pony: no matter how
many times he is proven wrong, he rises again as a commentator,
consulted and quoted by otherwise discriminating people. He was
wrong about global starvation, wrong about pesticide-induced riots,
wrong about race war, and wrong about nuclear annihilation.

Astroturf Russian Youth Movement Not Lovin' McDonald's

http://reason.com

Not content with scapegoating their
Olympic officials for Team Russia's poor performance, a
government-sponsored Russian youth group has turned on McDonald's.
To make their case against the international grease-merchants, the
group staged Olympic reenactments with obese athletes outside a
Moscow McDonald's. From

Question for the President

http://www.cato-at-liberty.org

By Michael F. CannonThe rationale for your proposed tax on high-cost health insurance plans is that it would encourage people to purchase less-comprehensive coverage and thereby reduce health care spending.
If that’s a good idea, then why is it bad when insurers raise premiums?
