Subsidies + IRS = Free Press!

http://blog.mises.org

The Federal Trade Commission has been conducting its second workshop on “how do we save traditional media from the Internet?” The reports I’ve read from the event are downright comical. One presenter, University of Illinois professor Robert W. McChesney, really takes the cake for his combination of alarmism and embrace of active government intervention. I’ll reprint some excerpts from his presentation and let y’all have at it in the comments:

Yevgeny Zamyatin: Libertarian Novelist

http://blog.mises.org

When we think of the libertarian tradition, we tend naturally to think of political philosophers and economists of the past. But one part of the libertarian tradition belongs to novelists and other fiction writers. FULL ARTICLE by Jeff RiggenbachJoin the discussion and post a comment

New at Reason: Ronald Bailey on the Deliciousness of Sea Turtle Steak

http://reason.com

The
Cayman Island Sea Turtle Farm was established by entrepreneur and
libertarian hero Antony Fisher in 1968. Unfortunately, the farm
went bankrupt when the trade in sea turtle products was banned
internationally. Now a government-owned corporation, the farm is a
huge tourist attraction supplying turtle meat to the local market;
it also releases thousands of turtles into the wild. Aware of the
vexed history of the farm, Reason Science Correspondent
Ronald Bailey traveled to the Cayman Islands to discover just how
tasty sea turtle can be.

"So Why Is the Swedish Welfare State So Successful?"

http://reason.com

For those of us who place more trust in free markets than
state-directed economies, we must inevitably (and repeatedly)
confront the skeptical interlocutor who details the "successes" of
Swedish social democracy.

American libertarian movement, Ayn Rand, Isabel Paterson, and Rose
Wilder Lane.
You might also want to see my May 2005 Reason magazine
essay
on Paterson
, which discusses her relationship with Rand and
Lane at length as well.

RIP Michael Foot, a Socialist Who Understood What Socialism Was

http://www.cato-at-liberty.org

By David Boaz“Michael Foot, a bookish intellectual and anti-nuclear campaigner who led Britain’s Labour Party to a disastrous defeat in 1983, died [March 3],” reported the Associated Press. He was 96.
Foot personified the socialist tendency in the Labour Party, which Tony Blair successfully erased when he won power at the head of a business-friendly, interventionist “New Labour.” Yet Foot remained a respected, even revered, figure.

Floods of new literature

http://blog.mises.org

Progress and Poverty by Henry George occupies an odd place in libertarian history – at once inspiring a generation towards anti-statism and yet also diverting many onto the land tax idea.Never Ask The End, by Isabel Paterson, seems to be a literary/fictional autobiography. Please someone read it and report back.
